18 Oct FILM: THE OFFLOAD
Catch verification is the corner stone of modern fisheries management. Watch our latest video to see how the South Georgia government do it in the Falkland Islands.
Its August, the end of the South Georgia fishing season, as Toothfish longliners sail some 3 days North-West to the Falkland Islands to offload their catch and prove to the Government that they have stuck to their quotas. And they better have. Legislation in the Islands provides for some of the highest fines and penalties known in the fishing world. It’s a nervous moment for even the most experienced fishing master as every single kilo of HGT is totted up. Mid-winter doesn’t sound like the best time to be standing on a windy dock in the South West Atlantic handling frozen fish but the blue skies that greeted Tronio during this port call seem to be as common in Stanley as the white snowfalls. We hope you enjoy our video!
